A tragic incident has continued to send shockwaves through Umuahia, the Abia State capital, following the death of Miss Christiana Innocent, a young sales girl who reportedly died from complications arising from a self-induced abortion.
According to ongoing investigations, the deceased became pregnant for a young man who allegedly abandoned her, a situation that left her emotionally distressed and desperate.
Findings revealed that Christiana’s biological mother resides in Lokpanta, while her children live at Agbama II, Olokoro, in Umuahia South Local Government Area. Upon discovering her pregnancy, she confided in her adoptive mother — her father’s sister — who works as a nurse in Isuikwuato, Abia State.
The nurse, according to sources, allegedly gave her a substance to terminate the pregnancy and assured her that there was no cause for alarm. However, Christiana reportedly took additional doses of the substance, leading to serious complications.
A voice note recovered from her phone indicated that she fainted on her way to the restroom but later regained consciousness. The following morning, she reportedly called her elder brother, pleading for assistance, but he could not respond immediately due to financial constraints.
When he eventually arrived at her workplace — UK Bar and Lounge, an outlet within the Sacramento Event Centre, owned by Prince Okereke — he met a tragic scene. Contrary to earlier reports, Christiana was not a staff member of the Sacramento Event Centre itself but worked at Prince Okereke’s outlet within the facility.
Preliminary findings point to the abortion-inducing substance given by her aunt, the nurse, as the likely cause of death.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s family and close associates have appealed to the relevant security agencies to grant permission for her immediate burial as investigations continue.
