The Federal Government of Nigeria is proposing a new initiative to address the “brain drain” in the country’s health sector by recruiting Nigerian medical practitioners and nurses who have migrated abroad to work with universities and hospitals in the country. The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, made this announcement at the 17th edition of the existing regime’s scorecard series, stating that the plan is a way to combat the loss of highly skilled medical professionals to other countries. He went on to say that other countries such as Gambia, Turkey, Egypt and the UK are also facing similar challenges and that this is a global phenomenon driven by market forces. To tackle this problem, the government intends to establish a new mechanism to connect Nigerian medical professionals in the diaspora with universities and hospitals in Nigeria. This would enable these medical professionals to share their expertise and skills with their counterparts in the country, through lectures and practical training. In addition, they will be able to provide medical services remotely, such as surgeries and patient consultations. This will enable them to make a positive impact on the health sector in Nigeria, while also remaining connected to their profession and maintaining their skills.
