A pastor who is also a legal practitioner, Aka-Bashorun Olawale Akanni, was on Wednesday re-arraigned before Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja for the alleged indecent treatment of a 14-year-old girl.

The Lagos State Government re-arraigned Akanni on a one-count charge bordering on the indecent treatment of a child.

The charge alleged that the defendant, who also serves as a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, indecently assaulted the minor at the Iwaya area of Lagos by fondling her breasts.

The prosecution counsel, Funmilola Aluko, told the court that the defendant had unlawfully fondled the breasts of the minor.

According to her, the offence committed contravened Section 135 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Following his plea, defence counsel, Morenikeji Oyekunle, prayed the court to allow her client to continue on the bail earlier granted by a Magistrate’s Court, arguing that he had complied with all conditions and was not a flight risk, being a lawyer and clergyman.

But Aluko opposed the bail request, urging the court to review the terms of release.

In his ruling, Justice Oshodi upheld the bail conditions previously granted by the Magistrate’s Court and directed the defence counsel to ensure the defendant’s presence at every adjourned date.

After the ruling, the prosecution informed the court that the complainant, now 27 years old, was present and ready to testify.

Led in evidence by the prosecution, the witness told the court that she met the defendant through her father, who was a member of the defendant’s church, the RCCG, on Lagos Island.

She said that in 2010, when she was about eight years old, she moved in with the defendant’s family to improve her academic performance and participate more actively in the church choir.

The witness alleged that during her stay, the defendant began to molest her sexually and physically.

She narrated how he would assault her and subject her to severe punishment whenever she performed poorly in school.

According to her, she eventually ran away from the defendant’s house and reported the matter to her parents.

She said she officially lodged a complaint in 2023 after learning of a similar incident involving another minor in the same church.

Under cross-examination, the witness told the court that she first confided in her class teacher, identified as Mrs Akingbeoyewa, about the alleged abuse while still living with the defendant.

At the close of her testimony, the defence requested an adjournment to enable it to obtain the Certified True Copy of the witness’s evidence.

The prosecution opposed the application, arguing that further delay could cause emotional distress to the witness.

Justice Oshodi granted the adjournment but invoked Section 193 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, awarding a cost of N50,000,in favour of the witness, to be paid by the defence before the next trial date.

The judge subsequently adjourned the case to December 9, 2025, for continuation of the trial.

Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo has sentenced a dismissed soldier with the Nigerian Army, 6 Battalion, Ibagwa in Abak, Corporal Stephen Iweh, to death by hanging for the murder of a 42-year-old man, Christopher Enobong Jimmy.

The incident occurred on 23rd May, 2021 along the East-West Road in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area.

The late Jimmy, who was the Manager of a Clearing and Forwarding Company in Port Harcourt, had offered Corporal Iweh a lift in his car from Trailer Park in Onne, Rivers State, to Ikot Abasi in Akwa Ibom.

Along the way, at Oboro Junction in Ikot Abasi, the 39 year-old soldier shot him ďead before fleeing with the vehicle and valuables.

Investigations revealed that Corporal Iweh, a father of three children, had illegally kept the AK-47 rifle which he said he “picked at Dambou, Borno State in 2018 and decided to keep it as personal arms”.

On the day of the killing, Corporal Iweh, was supposed to be on duty at the Army Store, 6 Battalion, Ibagwa, Abak, but abandoned his post to commit the crime.

He was later traced to Andy Guest House in Ukanafun, many kilometers from the scene of crime, where he was arrested and the rifle recovered.

In a judgment, the trial judge, Hon. Justice Bassey Nkanang held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that Corporal Iweh, a native of Ameke Nkor in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State, murdered Christopher Enobong Jimmy, an indigene of Ikot Abasi, robbed him of his Toyota Matrix car, while armed with an AK-47 rifle and unlawfully possessed the firearm without a license.

The late Jimmy, Manager of a Clearing and Forwarding Company in Port Harcourt, was travelling home in his grey Toyota Matrix, when he gave the soldier, who was in full military uniform, a lift, at the Trailer Park in Onne enroute Akwa Ibom State.

The soldier later shot Jimmy at a junction in Oboro, Ikot Abasi, where they had stopped to urinate and eat Pork meat, before fleeing with the vehicle and other belongings.

Nneato youths and Vigilantee stormed the boundary between Akụ, Okigwe, and Nneato and found more than 100 skeletons of their people. These victims, mostly from Okigwe communities, were allegedly killed by Ifeanyi Eze, also known as Gentle the Yahoo, the self acclaimed leader of the Biafra Liberation Army and his criminal gang—sadly with the support of some of their own brothers abroad who are said to be sponsoring them.

The most painful part is not just their death, but how they died. Many were tied hand and foot, dumped in the bush, and left to suffer in unimaginable pain until their last breath while others where blind folded and tied.

The Abia State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its investigation into the March 4, 2025 kidnapping and killing of the Managing Director of Dozzman Oil & Gas, Mazi Chidozie Confidence Chijioke, along Azumiri Road in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State.

The incident, which also claimed the lives of ASP Tanko Naptip of the Counter Terrorism Unit, Rivers State Command, and Mr. Anayo Ukwu, Director of Sobaz Oil & Gas, sent shockwaves across the state earlier in the year.

Acting on credible intelligence, police operatives traced the hideout of the suspected kidnappers to Ikot Ukpon Village in Obot Akara Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

On Thursday night, August 21, 2025, at about 8:30 p.m., the hideout was stormed in a coordinated raid. Six suspects were arrested during the operation. Items recovered include:
• Two AK-47 rifles
• Fifty-seven rounds of live ammunition
• One locally made pistol
• Six magazines
• A large bag containing charms and other items believed to be for spiritual protection

However, as the operatives were exiting the camp, they were ambushed by other fleeing members of the gang who attempted to rescue their arrested colleagues. A gun duel ensued. The six suspects arrested earlier sustained gunshot wounds while trying to escape and were confirmed dead on the way to the hospital. Two police officers also sustained injuries in the crossfire and are currently receiving treatment.

Police Commissioner CP Danladi Isa described the raid as a decisive step in dismantling the network of kidnappers terrorizing the Abia-Akwa Ibom axis. He vowed that the manhunt for other fleeing suspects would continue, stressing that there would be “no hiding place for criminals in Abia State.”

The Police Command called on residents to be vigilant and report anyone with unexplained bullet injuries or suspicious movements to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency hotlines.

The Nigerian entertainment industry is mourning the tragic death of Vic Matt, a talented executive producer, film director and manager of Big Brother Naija Season 10 housemate Bright Morgan.

Vic Matt, whose real name was Victor Tobechukwu Okoli, was reportedly abducted on Friday near Ntachi Osa in Enugu State and was subsequently killed by his abductors.

The devastating news was shared by Ben Cassie, a fellow film-maker, on Instagram, remembering him as a man of high principle and a respected figure who made a significant impact on the industry.

She described him as cool, calm, and intelligent, with a passion for making good films.

“It is hard for some of us to see those who genuinely wish us well. You always dropped words of encouragement even when I was most silent. In an industry of snakes and scorpions, you stood different.
